BODY LIFT

A body lift is a surgical operation which aims to correct sagging skin and underlying fat that exists on the legs, torso and arms (the tummy tuck is a type of body lift specific to the abdomen area). Therefore, depending on the particular body part required, there are different types of lifts.

In the initial consultation with your qualified plastic surgeon, the surgeon will see your skin type and medical history and discuss with you what he/she thinks is best. Risks include infection and there also exists the risk of the incisions opening which is why great care has to be taken for at least the first two weeks. Some individuals have said that they lose sensibility in and around the area of the incisions however this is usually temporary although a small number of patients have said that it is permanent. One of the biggest disadvantages of the body lift operations (complications aside) are the scars. All these factors should be taken into account when deciding on this type of surgery.

The inner leg lift involves an incision that is made along the groin crease. The outer leg lift involves incisions around the buttock area. Usually liposuction is performed in conjunction with both the inner and outer leg lift and the excess skin is removed. The advantages and disadvantages of this procedure should be weighed up as the scars are not small but should fade with time. This operation can help minimise cellulite and is often required after the patient has lost a lot of their body weight quickly and consequently has saggy skin.  This operation usually takes around 3-5 hours. Recovery involves being in bed without putting any pressure on the legs for around 48 hours after the operation. After a week a normal daily routine can be taken up without any exercise and with taking it easy. Swelling should take 2-3 weeks to go down. Nevertheless, the legs will take a few more weeks to completely return to normal.

The upper arm lift is used to correct sagging arms and is usually very effective in doing this, however it does leave a long scar on each arm. This is from the incisions made starting from the armpit going down to the elbow. However, these should fade with time.

General anaesthetic is usually used for these procedures.

With these body lift operations it is possible to return to work in two weeks. The scars will be red and feel hard for around 6 weeks then gradually they should start fading.
