OTOPLASTY (Ears pinned back)
Otoplasty (having ones ears pinned back) is an operation indicated for those who have protruding ears. Children as young as 4 onwards are eligible for this operation.
The operation lasts around 2-3 hours depending on the individual. The operation is usually done by a small incision placed behind the ear and the cartilage is then shaped accordingly. Afterwards a bandage is put around the head (like a head-band) which helps the ears maintain their new shape and protect them while they heal. Adults can return to work in 5 days while children can return to school in 1 week.
If this procedure is carried out by a fully qualified and experienced plastic surgeon complications are very unusual. Cartilage infection is a complication that can arise. This can be treated medically.
Anaesthetic
In small children general anaesthetic is recommended. Older children and adults can have local anaesthetic.
